Gunmen attacked a team of Guysuco workers in the
Lusignan backdam last night, beating some of the
victims and reportedly abducting an armed constable
and a labourer.
Three of the injured were taken to the Georgetown
Hospital by ambulance.
The victims are all from the LBI Estate.
Nandkaram Gopaul, 27, who had a gash to the head,
told Kaieteur News that he and about eleven other
Guysuco employees were in tractors near the Lusignan
Spring Bridge waiting to transport sugar cane to
Enmore, when they were approached by three men.
According to Gopaul, the men carried flashlights
and were armed with “long guns.”
He said that the gunmen dragged them out of the
tractors and proceeded to beat them. He was struck
in the head.
Kaieteur News was told that the gunmen, who also
discharged a few rounds, eventually fled, taking an
armed constable and a young labourer with them.
Gopaul said that they were eventually rescued by
a passing land-rover and taken to the Vigilance
Police Station.
He and two injured workers were then taken by a
Guysuco ambulance to the Georgetown Hospital .
At press time, there was still no word about the
whereabouts of the two missing men.
