A Kaneville businessman was gunned down at around 21:00 hrs last night in a shop by a heavily armed gang of men. In what appeared to be an execution-style killing, the victim, identified as Barbot Paul, was shot at close range in the head, chest and right side. The gunmen also shot at a minibus that had entered the community, wounding two passengers. Kaieteur News understands that the men stormed the S and N Sunrise Flat Shop, operated by Paul's reputed wife, firing shots in all directions. They confronted Paul, who was in the yard, and shot him dead. The slain businessman still had on his rings when this newspaper arrived on the scene. After killing Paul, the gunmen reportedly relieved the slain man of a firearm he had on his person. It is alleged that they then forced his 14-year-old daughter to accompany them to Paul's house, which is a corner away. Unconfirmed reports state that the men ransacked the home for a shotgun, but it is unclear whether they found the firearm. The men then freed the teenaged girl. A resident who runs a shop nearby said he peeped out on hearing the gunshots. “They fire a shot (at me) and we run back inside and lock up right away. When the gunmen were passing, they fire couple more shots at we.” The driver of a route 42 minibus, who declined to be identified, told Kaieteur News that he was entering the community with some passengers when be heard gunshots. He then spotted about five men with guns in front of him. He said that he immediately told his passengers to lie low, and tried to drive away. It was then that the gunmen, attracted by his headlights, began to shoot at the vehicle. A bullet shattered the rear windscreen. The driver said that he heard one of his passengers cry out that he was hit. According to the driver, he and the other passengers fled from the vehicle and took cover in the bushes. When the gunmen had left, persons took the wounded men to the hospital. Police recovered several spent shells that were scattered on the road and in the shop where the shooting occurred. Monday
